Legends of Havasu 2023
The 2023 Ultra4USA season wrapped up with Nationals at Legends of Havasu in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. Our goal as a team was to end the season on a high note and run a steady and consistent race.
Both 4400 cars were ready to go this race, and qualifying went smoothly with Pip and Dave coming in 19th and Chip and Brad in 24th. After a few tweaks Friday night, everything was ready to roll for race day.
Pip and Chip both had a strong first lap, driving pretty much by feel with low visibility, some GPS issues (including putting an iPad in the #78 car during a pit stop to have a map), and cars broken down everywhere.
A random mechanical issue ended Pip and Dave’s day early at the end of lap two. Chip and Brad were doing some testing for Maxxis by not running a liner. The tires did awesome, and they only lost one due to a high-speed drift that caught a sharp rock (not a tree) at the end of lap 3. After almost 150 miles, the other tires still looked almost brand new.
When the dust settled on course over four hours later, the #4 car ended up in 6th place – a top 10 finish to end the season.
After the race – and a quick stop for showers and outfit changes into some interesting tropical shirts – the team headed to the Ultra4USA banquet. We got to celebrate our friend Cody St. Clair with SCR Motorsports get the trophy for his first National Championship which was definitely a highlight of the weekend for us all.
During the banquet we also had the honor of handing over the Zandy Willems Sportsman of the Year trophy to Chad Hundt. There were so many amazing nominees, and we couldn’t think of a better way to end the season than honoring all those in the sport who embody Zandy’s spirit.
Here’s to a great 2024 season!
